#!/usr/bin/env python3 """ PROVENANCE: PROOF Computation 156 -- What would make a property subset a device, and what would not ================================================================================== Sec 19.9.1 leaves one item open after comp 151 closed the other: PST "derives no account of composite macroscopic objects, so that a laboratory device occupies a compact region at all, and is realised by exactly the properties whose fibres lie in it, is inherited rather than derived." This computation takes that sentence apart. Most of it turns out to be a corollary of eq:metric; what survives is smaller, and belongs in a category the book already has. CHECKS ------ (1) THE GEOMETRIC HALF IS A COROLLARY, NOT A GAP. For a spacelike pair eq:metric gives |s^2| = |T - tau_null|^{1/2}, so the proper distance is d(rho(a), rho(b)) = | T({a,b}) - tau_null |^{1/4}, a STRICTLY MONOTONE function of the tension excess. "D_A is spatially compact" and "D_A is tight in the tension structure" are therefore the same condition stated twice, not two conditions. Verified by round trip, and by recovering a planted subset from the tension matrix alone with no geometric input. (2) A COMPLETENESS LEMMA, so the search below is exhaustive rather than heuristic. If diam(S) < sep(S, D \\ S) then for every s in S and every x outside, d(s, x) >= sep > diam >= d(s, s'), so S is EXACTLY the |S| nearest neighbours of each of its own members. Enumerating (seed, k) therefore finds every compact-and-separated subset. Checked against brute force over all subsets at |D| = 14: both find the same five. (3) BOUNDED DIAMETER AND SEPARATION IS FAR TOO WEAK TO BE "A DEVICE". In an unclustered configuration every nearest-neighbour pair satisfies it, with a comfortable margin. Rate over 200 replicas of 60 properties: 1.000 at size 2. So the criterion the open sentence reaches for cannot be the definition. (4) CARDINALITY IS WHAT MAKES IT SHARP, AND THE THRESHOLD IS LOW. The accident rate falls 1.000, 0.970, 0.290, 0.035 at sizes 2, 3, 4, 5 and is 0.000 from size 6 up, over the same 200 replicas. A device of a dozen properties is not something an unclustered configuration produces. (5) BEING A DEVICE IS AN OPEN CONDITION, WITH A SHARP MARGIN. For any subset with m = sep - diam > 0, every perturbation of the induced distances below m/2 preserves the property, and m/2 is sharp: pushing the diameter pair out and the separation pair in by 0.99 * m/2 each leaves it intact, and 1.01 * m/2 breaks it. (At exactly m/2 the gap closes to zero and the strict inequality is decided by rounding, so the boundary case is not the test.) That is stability with an explicit distance to failure, and it needs no measure -- the same shape as comp 152's replacement for the non-balance genericity argument. WHAT IS LEFT, AND ITS CORRECT STATUS. Nothing above says why T has clusters of six or more in the first place. That is a statement about the configuration rather than about the structure, so it is T(C)-contingent -- the category the book already uses for the Yukawa hierarchies and the Lambda magnitude -- and not a hole in the foundational layer. The dynamical half, why a bound state forms and persists, is inherited with the projected field theory of Chapters 12-13, exactly as in ordinary quantum field theory; PST is no worse placed there than the framework it reproduces. ONE CAVEAT, AND IT IS THE SAME ONE COMP 152 RAISED. The accident rates in (3) and (4) are computed against a uniform null, and PST fixes no measure over configurations. They are therefore indicative, not measure-free. The margin result (5) IS measure-free, and is the part to lean on. A "pass": (1) the round trip closes and the planted set is recovered from T alone; (2) brute force and the kNN family agree exactly; (3) size-2 accidents at rate 1.0; (4) rate 0 from size 6; (5) intact at 0.99 m/2 and broken at 1.01 m/2.
